Why Do Men Wear Earrings?

I do not wear earrings. It is however part of our tradition that both male and female children get their ears pierced when they are small. They are provided with ear studs so that the holes do not get filled up again. When grown up, many males just discard the earrings although, many older people and in some communities, even now with the younger males, wearing ear-studs is quite common and is not looked askance at.

This story which was forwarded to me by a friend however, is in a different league altogether.

“I have often wondered how this trend got started, I now have the answer.

A man is at work one day when he notices that his co-worker is wearing an earring.

This man knows his co-worker to be a normally conservative fellow, and is curious about his sudden change in “fashion sense.”

The man walks up to him and says, “I didn’t know you were into earrings.”

“Don’t make such a big deal, it’s only an earring, “he replies sheepishly.

His friend falls silent for a few minutes, but then his curiosity prods him to say, “So, how long have you been wearing one?”

“Ever since my wife found it in my car.”

Any male readers out there who wear earrings/ear-studs?

Good story and a great way to introduce the discussion.

The odd ear stud is fine, but eyebrow, nose, tongue or belly button piercings are revolting to me.

lol that was a good one. I don’t even have pierced ears thankfully. The thought of a needle stabbing a hole so close to the brain/face is simply inconceivable to me. But if my potential girlfriend/wife catches one in my car, I know how to save myself (I just hope they will be clipons instead!).

Better still that you do not get a car as Sandeep says!

Regarding when earrings got started, I can’t say. There is, however, a command in the beginning of the Bible from perhaps 1,400BC by Moses that if someone wants to be a slave of another, there should be a public ceremony with the slave’s ear being pierced for an earring. I wonder if feminist with earrings would be happy with the imagery?

I’m afraid the idea of having my ears pierced never appealed to me, but then I don’t wear jewelry of any kind. I don’t even wear a watch…I have a pedometer with a little clock that I wear on my waist.

I remember thinking just before I went off to college: “They’ll never civilize me.” At the time I chuckled at the thought and wondered where it came from, but it turns out to have be a true prophecy. ;)

The custom of piercing the ears has a twofold significance in India. One it denotes your Hindu background. Second the point of the lobe vwhere a hole is pierced has acupressure/health implications. There is a ceremony performed for the ear piercing of a child. The child sits on the lap of the maternal uncle and the goldsmith ceremoniously pierces the ears of the ear old child. Nowadays, for girls many families are piercing the ears by the end of the first month or two. My daughter’s was done by RR when she was two months old. My son got one ear pierced in the US when he was in university. He wears only a stainless steels stud. My daughter—changes one every few days! I think Ranjan too has a ear pierced though none of my three brothers had theirs done.

I have nothing against men wearing ear-rings, though I am not a big fan of wearing them myself. My wife has never found any earrings in our car (maybe because we don’t own a car at the moment)?

The only man who looked cool wearing ear-rings was Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones back in the 1970s. Old Keef had a big sickle shaped bone ear-ring, which suited him really well. Of course, Keith Richards is the epitome of cool, and he may have looked jsut as cool without the earring!

That is the way to go. It is dangerous to wear jewelery now a days.

I have my ear pierced and personally think ear piercings on men are not a big deal today. Sure, 30 or 40 years ago it was for hippies or rock stars but you can say the same thing for tattoos. Also things like peer group, job dress code, area of the country you live in play a part of how people regard male ear piercings. Besides most men cannot get their ears pierced if they have an office job, with only two weeks of vacation they don’t have enough time to let the piercing fully heal before coming back to work.

No problems from my side with that.

Ha ha, I love that story! Poor guy. I guess it served him right though. I’m pretty sure that exact thing was a joke on Scrubs actually…

Personally I think ear rings on men is a bit weird. But to each their own.

I have my ear pierced have done since I was a teen. I dont see the problem with it my wife likes it, I just dont believe in piercing childrens ears when they are so young, let them make up their own minds when they are old enough.

    Fair enough!

The question could be: why do women? why does anyone? How did it come about that women do more than men.

Each to their own I say.
