Subliminal Messages.

I am of the firm opinion that we are constantly being bombarded with messages overt and covert, which play an important role in forming our opinions, values and judgments. The purpose of this post is to request that we become aware and not allow ourselves to be brainwashed by vested interests.
Just yesterday, a friend who is a widow and I were discussing our being single and how well meaning friends and relatives keep suggesting ways and means of handling that peculiar situation after losing a spouse. My friend said, it is easier for men as if they are gray they are considered to be distinguished and mature and if the same thing happens to a woman, she is considered to be over the hill. She further added that older men are able to find younger women but the reverse does not happen.
I ventured to suggest that all these are due to subliminal messages constantly being hammered away at us as to what is beauty, what is modern, what is style and so on, which are all superficial values, but which impress us nevertheless both at the conscious and subconscious level. Us ordinary people get plastered with these values and the only ones to benefit from this massive over load of information are the guys who sell products to get you there.
Even women not finding younger men seems to follow the logic of such brain washing. I for one do not understand why this should be so and we have any number of cases of older women having had long sustained and wonderful relationships with younger men.
We seem to be letting our entire universe be sabotaged by such frivolous values that mankind seems to be losing out to businesses who stand to benefit. Even the media seems to be under some compulsion to follow such inane policies like milking some odd event to death as in the case of Carrie Prejean and her adventures with her title, her breast implants and so on.Just look at this news item and the amount of time and space wasted on breast implants to see why I am chagrined with such frivolity.
This is but the tip of the iceberg. Even the incident of gray hair, is something that I find silly to say the least. I told my friend that my late wife Urmeela never dyed her hair and I found her gray hair quite attractive and elegant, to which my friend retorted that I am not the representative sample of decision makers! Similarly, while I am all for weight management for health reasons, the obsession to fight nature like some of my younger friends are doing after child birth, is nauseating to say the least.
This is the first time that I am venturing into writing something on this subject though I have commented on various blog posts on similar lines. I wonder what sort of responses I am likely to get for this rant!
And lest Gail, be disappointed, let me close with some humour.
I am informed by a post in Grannymar’s blog, that widows join other widows and form clubs called “Minus One”. Can you imagine what would happen if widowers formed clubs with the same name?

I had a female friend who was constantly at me to remarry. Anyone would think it was as easy as changing socks!
I became annoyed with her one day and said “Show me the shelf in the supermarket where they display the ‘Men available’ and I will look them over!” Funny thing is she has not called to see me in a long time.
Do you think she is searching the Supermarkets

I promise not to send you any more subliminal messages.
My aunt died many years ago when my uncle was 70-something. A decade later, he married a girl he knew from high school, so I guess they were roughly the same age.

I cannot help but agree with you sir. I am not a big fan of hair dyes either and admire those who age elegantly and gracefully. Fighting nature isn’t exactly my style either.

I enjoyed the slide show on breasts. I like breasts as much as the next person. However, I agree with you completely about how advertising and the media shape our opinions. In fact, my next blog will be about how the media often creates news, instead of reporting it.
Look at India and how we are constantly bombarded with advertising telling us that to be “fair-skinned” is somehow better than being dark-skinned, and the willfully wrong advertising that tells us that all you need to be fair-skinned is to apply a few lotions/creams that cost a lot of money. This, in a country where a majority of the population is dark-skinned ! Similarly, the American media is obsessed with youth and beauty, though both fade over time.

Being close to 92. I have men chasing me that are close to 70 and older. Grannymar has not put out her instructional booklet, so I can pick the best Toyboy (The Grannymar Method). If they don’t stop chasing me, I’m going to start shooting. Jail may not be so bad! I will give the media something to really talk about! I’m going to stop using that ‘breast” tighting cream! Besides, your are right, it’s expensive!!

I do not believe that you are 92. I think that you are just 29!

My step-dad is 6 years older than me. He does everything, literally, for my mom — but then, again, she is totally lazy, I am very sorry to say. She is 17 years older than me. They have been married for 36 years, almost as long as Karen and I.
Karen has been dying her hair for many many years. Then 6 months ago, she stopped. Two weeks ago she had had enough. Her gray hair was making her feel old and so she dyed it again.

Mike, that is a fascinating story of your family background. We have many such cases here due to a very prevalent child marriage system in many communities. The step father is likely to be non existent, but mothers with such low age difference from their offspring are quite common.

Sandeep Gupta, I looked at the breast slide show too. You can tell they’re fake because you see the outline of the implant all the way around.
In India, there were NO people, male or female, that didn’t have excellent posture. That’s sexy.
Gail I don’t believe you are close to 92. You write like you’re 22, very hep. Excuse me; that’s such a NOT hep word anymore. Groovy is out too. Gail, you’d know the “in” word. OMG “in” is out too.

Bikehikebabe, I think that you are on to something there. Gail, I suspect is actually only 29!

Hi,
I am not familiar to this term but i think a subliminal message is a signal or message embedded in another medium, designed to pass below the normal limits of the human mind’s perception.
Thanks.

You are indeed right. It can also mean that without overtly conveying a message, by subtle suggestions, a message can be sent such as size zero being the ideal.
