I came across this very interesting post about an experiment in Malawi that has laid the foundation stones for a possible breakthrough in providing health and medicare to less developed areas of the world at very low costs.

What is amazing about it is that the brains, and more importantly, the hearts behind the effort belong to college students in the USA.

To read more about both the initiative and its success and the students, please visit the sites and do what you can to encourage.

We have had a couple of schemes to recycle old mobile/cell phones for Irish Charities. It is great to think they are put to good use when the owners upgrade.

That is interesting. What happens to the old handsets? Do they get distributed to the destitute or do they end up doing things like what is happening in Malawi?

I have yet to find a headset that will hold up at any price.

OMG handsets??? I can’t even read anymore.

BHB, I like the monicker that Conrad has given you. Modesty? Does not become you.

Yes, incredible work by those young college students. Revives my faith in youth.

Ramana, this is a marvelous story. We are all coming to a very important fork in the road that will determine so much of the quality of human existence and it is so gratifying to see young people taking the correct path. The choice is either to a culture of dominance by force, our side trying to beat your side into submission or a culture of sharing in which we recognize that we all really do share a very small world with needs that abound.

It is difficult to find enough energy for both.

In today’s world to find good stories is getting to be increasingly difficult and such as these, really make me think that all is not lost. Yet!

This is a very good breakthrough in health service throughout the world. I hope this one would come into realization. A lot of people especially in low developed countries would greatly benefit. I salute you!

I was just kidding when I said “OMG I can’t read anymore.” I misread it headset instead of handset. You sent “Modesty? Does not become you.” Humor varies from country to country—HOWEVER being the sage that you are you “hit the nail on the head”. I’ve been accused of putting myself down more than once.

How about this? I’m old but not at all overweight & physically fit!

My apologies BHB. I too was just kidding. Anyway, point well made and noted for future reference. If you truly are old, not overweight and physically fit, my topi off to you. I wish I could say the same thing!

Out of the box thinking and lets remember the man who said necessity is the mother of all inventions also shall we. Brilliant idea, these are the guys who talk solutions rather than obsess over the problems. I hope to fall into their category one day, lets see!

Innovation emerges from minds that have not grown rigid or stuck in conformity. Young minds tend to have had less external brainwashing time. The creative energy generates incredibly simple ideas that have widespread application. Thanks for sharing th article.

That’s pretty awesome. A lot of people in the US and other developed countries changes phone almost quarterly to keep up with the trend. They are better off donating their old handsets to this really helpful project.

Amazing what young, fresh, and creative minds can do when they are not quashed with negativity or prematurely disregarded.
