The Joy And The Punishment.

The joy:
Now, the punishment if this guy got caught driving in this condition in Singapore.
The second clip is an amazing video which was sent to me by my brother Barath. This shows what the Singapore Police do for first time offenders charged with driving while drunk. I doubt that the punished will ever want to repeat the offense.

The first one is funny, so much like a Charlie Chaplin skit that I wondered if it had been an act.
The second one is heavy-handed government brutality.

I agree with Mike Goad on both points – as brief as they are.
Ramana, how much joy is there in being flat on your back like one of those big hard backed beetles unable to turn over or, in the man’s case, get up?
“Punishment by youTube” that’s what I call this clip. Can you imagine in about fourty years time: “This is a clip of your grandfather.” Trouble is that there is a level of inebriation at which you lose the plot and can’t be held responsible for your (in)actions. Which calls for compassion, possibly an ambulance, but certainly someone to take care of him before he falls down the next airshaft.
Clip Two, one beautifully rounded bottom later, now presumably scarred for life. And let’s not forget we all have to sit down some time sooner rather than later: I dare say they won’t have stitched the cuts afterwards. Or maybe that was for desserts to prolongue the agony.
Is the punishment in proportion to the ‘crime’? Of course not – even accounting for cultural differences. Will he drink and drive again in the future? Who knows: After all, once tissue is scarred like that he probably won’t even feel any pain at the next lashing. If of a certain temperament he might do it again just “to make the first round worthwhile”. And let’s not kid ourselves as to corporal punishment: Even in countries where they hack off your hand if caught stealing a loaf of bread people will still do so if necessity pushes them over the edge of the law.
I sincerely hope someone will have kissed his wounds better.

If someone does kiss his wounds, the rascal will be back for more!

I do not want to feel his “pain”! The last thing I (age 6 or 7) remember about my father before he died from a car accident is the spanking I got for not coming home with the cows, when I was suppose to be resposible for them. OUCH!!!!!

Oh yes, I can remember some beltings too! We spare the rod and spoil the child now a days!

Ramana, if anyone had ever touched my son they’d have had to deal with me – an experience best avoided. My heart goes out to both of you, Maynard and Ramana.
Think about it linguistically (Conrad, take note): Spoil/spoilt is one of those misunderstood words in the English language. Taking a rod or a vicious tongue to a child has a high chance of “spoiling” a youngster indeed: Think food – as in ‘gone off’ and ‘gone bad’. Sorry to spell this out: By employing the rod you might literally perpetuate your own vindictiveness and thus SPOIL another human being.
On a sidenote, and then I shut up: How clever is it for a grown up man to employ his strength on his own seedling? Ramana, I am in full flow: Any moment now I shall reflect on the sins of the fathers to be visited upon their sons.

Ursula, Mothers can commit sins too! How many young sons are so mollycoddled by their mothers that they are unable to stand on their own two feet? Unable to build a relationship with another person…
The most difficult thing any parent must face, is to allow our children to make their own mistakes and hopefully learn from them. We do not own our children; we have a lend of them and if we teach them to stand independently on their own two feet, then we have done a good job!

I watch the 2nd video and i feel shock. My skin hair stands up because i never thought that Singapore police would do punishments just like that. Well drunk drivers must see this.

In video one, it surprised me that only once did he let go of the package(beer?) he held in his hand, and he quickly grabbed it again!
The second one was painful to watch, though he must have a high pain tolerance as he didn’t make a sound until slash 7, I believe.

The first one lightened up the mood and the second switched the mood so dramatically. What a contrast!

The punishment is way out of line on fitting the crime. While drunk driving is a serious offence and can cost lives, I think there are more effective ways of getting the point across without resorting to barbarity. One things for sure, that guy is going to be sleeping on his stomach for a long time.

I doubt that he will ever again drive after getting drunk though.

As Ursula says, that sort of punishment, apart from being barbaric, won’t necessarily stop him getting drunk again. There have to be more civilised ways of preventing drunken misbehaviour.

I have serious doubts though that in Singapore he will drive after getting drunk. Incidentally, you will hardly see any drunks in Singapore.

This kind of brutality is not the solution. No doubt drunk driving is a serious crime, but this kind of punishment would scar a person mentally as well as physically. I would never be in favour of something like that

But, Singapore is Singapore and the locals favour such deterrent punishments.

I’ve watch the video, that’s really hurts. Scary.

If only punishment did deter. There are still drunk drivers I hear.

Singapore is an antiseptic state. If you ever have to visit, please learn all their rules, otherwise, you can land up in grief.

The punishment as shown in the second video should be implemented as a matter of fact in all the countries. I know several guys including some of my friends who behave so foolishly by driving after getting reckless binge drinking. They brag about the thrill but they never seem to care about the mishap. If you cant give up drinking drink at home and then pass out or go to the bar by walk and get back to home by walk.

Oh… my… goodness! That first one was something else! The second one… well, I’m of mixed minds about that one. We don’t usually condone beating folks over here, which is probably why we don’t like this caning thing, but if the lesson was learned and he didn’t hurt anyone, what can I say?

Goodness. I always find something interesting over here and I certainly appreciate all the intelligent and thought-provoking comments. I do like to have a drink every once in a while but both of these videos make me not want to over-do it.
