Migration / Promotion To Apple Macintosh.

On Ranjan’s insistence following my repeatedly disturbing him to come to my help to solve problems with my using Windows XP, I have now migrated to a Mac. Ranjan calls it a promotion whereas I prefer to call it a migration.

I am yet to get used to the new key board, mouse and the way that Mac works and so may be a little tardy in my responses to comments and posting blogs. Please bear with me.

Just as a matter of curiosity, what would you call it? A migration or a promotion?

Let’s call it migration. I have never used Mac in my life. It is good to try new things in life. “A person who does not want to lose the sight of the shore will never discover new horizons” (…).

    Rummuser Reply:

You are a treat Lizwi. Thank you for that encouragement.

I bought my wife a new Mac a month ago after she had worked contentedly for ten years on a Windows 2000 box. The best way to describe it is a family adventure. Something like the Swiss Family Robinson or Lost In Space. OK, maybe a bit less dramatic, but certainly it represents a major upheaval to the family as we all take turns hunting for the feature that was there on the old system.

    Rummuser Reply:

It has not been quite that bad yet Looney. I suppose I need some more time with it!

I bought a mac thirty years ago…. it still keeps out the rain!

I’d call it promotion, you get a better pay scale.

    Rummuser Reply:

I am in the process of fainting with a drop in my blood pressure brought about by the uncontrollable laughter. GM you have once again taken the ridiculous and made it sublime!

  4. Comment by Evan:

How I long to buy myself a mac. Some day soon I hope. Definitely a ‘promotion’ I think. I’ll be interested to hear how you find it.

    Rummuser Reply:

I am already beginning to enjoy the difference. The key board and the mouse, both wireless are a bit stiff but I suppose that I will get used to them or they will become more pliable!

    Grannymar Reply:

    Stiff? Try this: http://www.usbnow.co.uk/p1314/Bendi_Board_Light_Up_Keyboard/product_info.html

    Rummuser Reply:

    Will do Grannymar. Thanks.

I switched almost two years ago and found the transition fairly easy. I bought Switching to the Mac, The Missing Manual Leopard Edition but I assume you would want the Snow Leopard Edition. Both the Mac and the book are well worth the money.

Have fun with your new toy. :)

    Rummuser Reply:

I am already having fun. Ranjan has packed it with a lot of goodies and once the new webcam is installed, the old one is incompatible with Macs, I am in business!

  6. Comment by Judy Harper:

I tried working on Mac’s when they first came out and swore I would never work on one again! Mac’s are not very useful in business as most software is windows based. My boss has a Mac, but he had to buy Window’s adapters and software to be able to use our accounting software. As I told him, he’s own his own if he has a problem, so when his computer gives him havoc he has to call in help! The thing is, that if you have to buy window adapters and software, you’re open to the same problems as a windows PC, so, he’s still virus susceptible. Plus, there are now 4 viruses that have been targeted and gotten through on Mac’s. I guess the hackers couldn’t let the Mac’s commercial go unchallenged! Good luck Ramana, I wish you much happiness on your Mac. A lot of people like them, I’m just not one of them.

    Rummuser Reply:

Judy, having been working at it for some hours now, my reaction is that I can get used to this! I do not know about the accounting package etc, as I do not have any thing to account for, so, perhaps I may be able to get away with it!

  7. Comment by Conrad:

I’d call it a switch of hemispheres!

    Rummuser Reply:

That is an intriguing suggestion Conrad! From the top hemisphere to the lower reaches? Or is it the other way around?

  8. Comment by Padmini Natarajan:

Linear transition!! At your age Ki pharak penda?

    Rummuser Reply:

    Indeed! Ki pharak painda?

  9. Comment by Vignesh:

Ramana-athan, welcome to the rest of your life! MacOSX is what windows aspires to be. I’ve spent 40 years too many working on windows and coincidentally, am thinking of asking Sundar to get me a MAc when he comes down later this month. Maybe I will call ranjan for some advice. VMFusion (VM is for Virtual Machine) – this software allows you to run windows on your mac as well, if you use any of those speciallised softwares that run only on windows. Install a stripped down bare bones version of windows XP and toggle between both OSs.Windows on Mac runs better/ faster than windows on PC! But I think you dont use any of those, so just stick with the MAC. Good job Ranjan!

    Rummuser Reply:

I have been using the Mac since last evening and do not find much difference. At least so far. Some intial problems had to be sorted out like using the command/apple key instead of the control key, navigating the desk top etc. Ranjan is impressed with the speed at which I have picked up! Claims credit for being a good teacher!

  10. Comment by gaelikaa:

Migrated or promoted? How about graduated? Or evolved? Can you send your email yet? Would this explain why Ranjan emailed me this am in answer to my query instead of you and I only realised AFTER I’d sent the reply……how mortifying…he’s your SON for God’s sake.

Anyway, congratulations on the Mac. May it last forever and serve you well…

    Rummuser Reply:

Thank God he is my son, looks like me and not the milkman. And he is a very nice bloke too thank you.

That was a goof up Gaelikaa. For a while the mail was being received and sent on his gmail account. Till I signed him off and signed myself in. Sorry about that.

    gaelikaa Reply:

No need of saying sorry, I just found it a bit confusing that’s all. I’m not saying he is not a nice bloke or anything like that. But when you’re talking to someone, it is nice to know who it is. Otherwise, it can make for a rather awkward situation.

Seems I should be saying sorry…

    Ranjan Rajgopaul Reply:

    Hello,

To clarify your confusion… it was NOT me doing the mail. By accident while setting up Dad’s email ID on the Mac, I mistyped Ranjan Rajgopaul as the account name. So Gaelikaa, you got the mail from my dad’s account, not mine – check the mail headers and you will see. It actually would read from Ranjan Rajgopaul (rrajgopaul at gmail dot com). This is my dad’s email id not mine. :-)

    gaelikaa Reply:

oh, please don’t take this much trouble, we all are friends. As far as I’m concerned anyway. I didn’t take it that seriously….

    Rummuser Reply:

Just forget it dear Gaelikaa. AAAAAAAAAL ISSSSSSSS WELLLLLLLLL

    How about a fruit-ion?

    Rummuser Reply:

    I love it.

  12. Comment by bikehikebabe:

    It’s a “Promoted Migration”.

    Rummuser Reply:

The diplomat as ever. You are something yet BHB!

  13. Comment by Maynard:

Macs have been going up and down my road for 2 months now, but they have 6 wheels.
How many wheels does you Mac have , Rummy?

    Rummuser Reply:

Mayo, enough to keep me tied down here. If they had any more, I would be transported to your end of the world to parade up and down on the road where you live.

  14. Comment by Darlene:

I got my first Mac last week on my daughter’s urging. She loves her Mac and I am beginning to get used to my Apple laptop. Getting used to using a touch screen instead of a mouse is harder than getting used to things like not being able to delete the next letter but having to move the cursor behind it and back spacing.

I would call it a migration but my daughter would call it a promotion. Maybe I will agree with her someday. It is different.

    Rummuser Reply:

I like Nick’s suggestion to call it fruit-ion!

  15. Comment by Phill Smith:

Ramana congratulations!! Your blood pressure will be lower by 10 points. I have and do use both. I do have to say that the PC has increased my vocabulary i.e. “son of a glitch” and other choice phrases that I did not know I had within me.

Your transition will seamless. You have a great instructor and a great machine.

    Rummuser Reply:

Thanks Phil. It is a new adventure alright. Your last paragraph is bang on. Ranjan is pleased as punch.

  16. Comment by Delirious:

My daughter just got her bachelor’s degree in Media arts. The mac is the best computer for her line of work!

  17. Comment by magpie11:

Some i know would call it an Elevation to a higher level.

    Rummuser Reply:

I don’t know yet Magpie. Shall post again after I use it for a while.

  18. Comment by Darlene:

After paying what I did for my Apple laptop I have no choice but to ‘hang in there.” Take heart, Rummuser, we will master this beast yet.

    Rummuser Reply:

I am well on the way Darlene!
