Delirious was reminded of this poem, when she read my post Self Worth.
The Touch of the Masters Hand
Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
thought it scarcely worth his while to waste much time on the old violin,
but held it up with a smile; “What am I bidden, good folks,” he cried,
“Who’ll start the bidding for me?” “A dollar, a dollar”; then two!” “Only
two? Two dollars, and who’ll make it three? Three dollars, once; three
dollars twice; going for three..” But no, from the room, far back, a
gray-haired man came forward and picked up the bow; Then, wiping the dust
from the old violin, and tightening the loose strings, he played a melody
pure and sweet as caroling angel sings.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer, with a voice that was quiet and low,
said; “What am I bid for the old violin?” And he held it up with the bow.
A thousand dollars, and who’ll make it two? Two thousand! And who’ll make
it three? Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice, and going and
gone,” said he. The people cheered, but some of them cried, “We do not
quite understnad what changed its worth.” Swift came the reply: “The touch
of a master’s hand.”
And many a man with life out of tune, and battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd, much like the old violin, A
“mess of pottage,” a glass of wine; a game – and he travels on. “He is
going” once, and “going twice, He’s going and almost gone.” But the Master
comes, and the foolish crowd never can quite understand the worth of a soul
and the change that’s wrought by the touch of the Master’s hand.

My question to Delirious is: am I the old battered violin or the gray haired man from the back?
Did the ladies bring out the best in me or did I bring out the best in the ladies?

Not to dissapoint you, but I was thinking of the 500 rupees in the story you told.

You don’t have to let me down gently Delirious. After those two young ladies, I am willing to be anything! Including the crumpled 500 rupee note.
That’s one tough question. No matter how much you tried to be the master, you end up being the old violin most of the time. It takes a lot to be the master, the one who make a positive impact on other people’s lives.

I’ve used that story many times, it is a good one.
As to your latest question…. You may well be the grey haired old man from the back, but from the front…..I think you would be a right old fiddle!

Grannymar, You must visit me in Pune and come with me to ensure that I don’t float away!
Did you bring out the best or did the ladies. The violin needed the master to bring out its best and the master needed the violin to showcase his blessed talent. You bring out the beauty and wisdom that is in all of us and hopefully, we all, in some way, give the same back to you.

Great way of looking at it Maria. Thank you. I hope that I did. The new young friend from the coffee shop continues to be in touch.
I love this story. Maria from Silver Fox said it for me.
… maybe you are the auctioneer!
I’ve always loved this story. I poke fun at you, as you with me, but I would say you are worthy of any of the roles.

It takes an old fossil to come up with that twist to the tale. What a thought!
Dear Rummer,
I am a regular visitor to your blog and you inspired me to create my own blog. What a lovely story! And what a fine way to start my day!. I feel that the violin and the master are complementary – in line with the comment from Maria -one does not exist without the other…. and I constantly seek a master to tune me so that I can deliver my best to the world. Have a nice day!
P.S. I do not know why but it reminded me of Neil Diamond singing “Play me” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HD6O9patDE

Welcome to the comment box Sree. I hope that you will make it a habit. I can listen to ND sing play me every day. It is a beautiful song. Have been to you blog and like what I see there.
I think I would prefer to be the old battered violin. It would be nice if someone found some unexpected potential in me and let it out for everyone to appreciate.

My thought too if I may share it with you.
I always take countless lessons from this story, it is never too late, we all have beautiful music locked within us, some are catalysts, some are performers, we all have something to contribute…..
As do you dear friend.

WWW you are another one of those souls who ensure that my self worth stays way up there! Thank you.
Maybe you are the the gray haired man from the back? Anyway, in some ways, gray haired man and the old violin have common denominator.. They are both old yet important.

Violin really makes me feel happy. Thanks for the share.
This is one of the most difficult issues. will take a long time to become the master, which positively influences the lives of others.
Hi, your writing is extraordinary and I really like it. I think you are the gray haired man because you gave inspirational writings like this one to the readers just like the man did to the battered violin.
I’m really impress with all the post on this site. Keep on posting, you’re doing a great job and I thank you for that. I’m enjoying reading your post.
