I will be 69 come June this year and many of my blog world and offline friends and relatives are naturally around my age.
One of the problems of aging is that one is expected to “behave” one’s age. This is something that I find extremely difficult to do as, I know many others do too.
So, when I come across some interesting things that senior citizens are up to, I get quite thrilled and naturally wish to share it with my friends and family.
Here is a story of indomitable spirit, of a senior citizen human being and a senior citizen animal. I hope that this inspires my fellow senior citizens as much as it does me.

I think that is a great story! I also watch a television show called “The Incredible Dr. Pol” about a veterinarian who is 69. This guy is amazing and is still practicing with large animals. I’ve seen him wrangle cows and goats and sheep. He is still very strong! http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/dvm/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/746149

I read about this vet and he is indeed truly incredible. Thank you.
I hope it doesn’t inspire you to do anything foolish–like go on escalators.

Going on elevators now is not a problem CM. I am sans crutches. Much more maneuverability.

Elevators? Even in my present dizzy state I wouldn’t hesitate to go on one of those. Escalators are a completely different matter.

I never behave “my age”. I’m not even sure what that means apart from all those idiotic stereotypes about doddery old folk. I just do what I want to do and always have done. Why should we place artificial limits on ourselves for the sake of squeamish youngsters?

People like you and me, cannot behave our age even if we want to. And that is the rub!
When you are a baby your parents coax you to talk and by the time you are a teenager, each time you open your mouth they ask you to shut up! And it gets worse when you grow old… Like you rightly said, the younger generation expects you to “behave” your age (basically to remain inconspicuous and keeping the mouth shut when they discuss family matters!). As long as you have the financial & physical independence they will leave you alone to do whatever you like (My FIL was like that until he succumbed to bone marrow cancer) The key is to keep your mind young… hope I will be able to do that when my time comes….:)

Thanks, I read the post and found it insightful – the rummertouch is evident

He sure got that right.

What a quote. It sneaks up on your sensibilities!
You are only as old as the company you keep !!

Does it work for the others who keep my company?
thanks for this, Ramana, However some of these articles make certain oldsters feel worse as they are unable to “act young” so we must remember them too and not have feelings of inadequacy soaring around.
I know I am viewed as exceptional ‘for my age’ with my achievements but I would hate to think anyone else was feeling bad and hopeless comparing themselves.
I hope I’m making sense. Today my brain runneth in 18 directions….

I think that your brain works best when it runneth in 18 directions. Great insight indeed.
What I love about you is that You don’t look like 68 years old. You still write blogs. You are such an inspiration to all! Kudos!

Why, thank you kindly. That has made my day for me. Do you blog?
I have read of senior citizens being able to finish their college degrees at their age. That means the Olympic dream of such a great athlete is also possible.

Indeed. There is a regular commentator on this blog who is doing exactly that, studying for a University Degree.
Isn’t this just proof that we’re never too old to follow our dreams? As your elder…(I’ll be 70 in May.)

Absolutely! As Joseph Campbell says, it is never too late to start to follow one’s bliss.
There will always be hope for everyone. Nice post.
To behave your age? lol..When my mother was in her mid-50s, someone told her something similar..in turn, she completely changed her lifestyle, started doing yoga, running and hitting the gym 4 times a week. 2 years later she ran her first marathon, and last summer she actually travelled to Africa to climb Kilimajaro (and she succeeded!) So really, sometimes, age is just a number..

While I do not intend to nor am I physically capable of running a marathon, I intend doing some of the things that your mother did. It is just a matter of time.
