I got a phone call this morning from a lady friend from Bengaluru. As soon as I saw her name flashing on my mobile phone, I answered with “Happy Holi” instead of the usual greetings. She got quite annoyed that I was greeting her for a festival that neither of us celebrate and berated me for not greeting her for Women’s Day. I apologized and remarked that I did not know that it was Woman’s Day today.
That brings me to the topic of this post. There are days, promoted by various vested interests like florists, greeting card manufacturers, couriers etc for all and sundry. How is it that there is no Man’s Day?
I think that this is discrimination of the highest order and conceited sexism in reverse. I am sure that my male readers will agree with my thought.
What do my women readers have to say to that observation?
SD I hope that you are reading this post and will respond!

Bengaluru – what a great word – sounds like a tiger-striped kangaroo or something. And Rummy – here Men’s day happens on Superbowl Sunday, the day ofthe last game of the world series, NCAA finals during March Madness – I think you get the picture.

Loud and clear.
I’ve never heard of “Women’s Day”, although next week sees “Mother’s Day” in the UK. This used to be the ‘religious’ Mothering Sunday (referring to ‘Mother Church’) and when I was a child it meant giving your mum a small hand made gift or a few flowers. Now it’s all about making money for greeting card manufacturers, florists etc.

Exactly. I must come up with some other weird idea to make some pocket money too.
I don’t agree with you at all, Ramana. Of course it’s not discrimination. Every day of the year is Men’s Day since men still rule the world, deny it or not. Women’s Day is just a small attempt to rectify the balance and give women a bit more say in the way the world is run. They’ve still got a very long way to go. How many women are there at the top of India’s government and major businesses?

Fair enough. Not all women want women’s day either!
I agree with all three previous comments. Not least Nick’s. “Woman’s day”? How much more condescending can it get?
“Woman’s DAY”? Gee, thanks. What do I do tomorrow?
It’s just artificial nonsense. Big John mentions “mother’s day”. That’s not in my calendar either. Every day my son comes back home in one piece and happy is “Mother’s day” for me. And if someone wants to give me flowers I’d rather they did it on their own accord, not prompted by a day in the calendar.

You are unique Ursuala and thank God for that.
Huh! Everyday is a Man’s day.
Remember the English professor who wrote these words on the board:
“A woman without her man is nothing”
He asked his students to punctuate it correctly. All of the males in the class wrote:
“A woman, without her man, is nothing.”
All of the females in the class wrote:
“A woman: without her, man is nothing.”
Naturally being female, I agree with the last line.

It is certainly is my day everyday!
I’m not rising to this one.
Reminds me too much of provocative use of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians.

Perhaps “our day” has been ignored by women.

You are a very wise man Tikno.
naturally like your website however you have to take a look at the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very bothersome to inform the truth nevertheless I will certainly come again again.
