My father, himself a Homeopath wanted some medicines and I strolled up to the local Homeopathy medicine retailer, run by a husband and wife team of Homeopaths.
This shop had opened up just a couple of years ago and has enabled the locals to source their homeopathy medicines from close by, instead of going to the city to do so. It is a nice compact little place, but not very comfortable to sit and wait for the medicines to be dispensed.
This time around, I was second to be waited on and the first one was a young mother picking up various things for her infant and consulting the doctor on various matters. As I am wont to, and since I knew the young lady, I kept teasing her and the atmosphere was quite relaxed and casual.
After I had finished my transactions with the couple, the lady doctor suddenly asked me if I was Ranjan’s father. On being confirmed, she said that for a while, she had been wanting to ask that question as normally Ranjan would come with the unique hand written prescription that my father writes on the back of used envelops. Ranjan normally runs errands for his grand father, and I had not been there since last June. On being answered in the affirmative, she further added that they keep seeing Ranjan near their residence too. Ranjan often visits his friends Karen and Yadu, their neighbours.
With that background, the lady asked me some more details about our home and I could not resist the temptation to quip that our home consisted of three motherless children, all bachelors and it was a comfortable place to be as there was no woman to bug us.
The husband, quietly handling the packing of the medicines and toting up the bill suddenly burst out laughing and insisted on shaking my hands. The poor lady, was taken aback a bit, but smartly recovered and joined in in the laughter.
I made a couple of new friends and more importantly, they have now offered to keep the medicines ready for me if I would telephone ahead. This would enable me to avoid the uncomfortable sitting around to get the prescriptions filled.

Thank God–they did not start prescribing medicines for you ‘throatla appendicitis’!

I did buy some eye drops for myself though!
Good one!
Even all the way over here, I can feel the warmth of that exchange!

Yes, warmth is the word to explain the situation.
You have a deligthful sense of humor. No wonder people love you! I also think that perhaps that husband heard a little more from his wife when you left. LOL

Now that is something that I had not thought of, but this is quite accepted as humour in our families.
i spent 2 and 1/2 hours on the phone yesterday just trying to get a primary care physician. every doctor they gave me no longer would take medicare patients. they apparently don’t make enough money doing that! pharmacies are big serious business here. money. money.
i cannot imagine how delightful yours is in contrast. i would love it!
just a smile makes a difference! i’m a laugher too. it’s the best medicine!
happy day to you … you dear cowboy bachelor!

Those of us still blessed with GPs attached to us, like we are, will tell you stories to warm your heart. Our hospitals, particularly the modern commercial ones, are a different story altogether.
And the very same to you too Tammy.
Rummy you humor yourself as much as you want about not having any women in your home. But deep down , you know it would be great to have a couple of women around.

Why only a couple? The happiest times that my home had seen were when we had my late mother and late wife here and subsequently, my late wife and ex daughter in law living here. I would indeed dearly love to have at least one living under the same roof with me. But I use humour as a tool to cover up that want.
Actually three generations of women living in one home is pretty common in our society. Three men alone is uncommon!!
RR does have a lady housekeeper coming in to do—well! the lady’s chores.

I’m afraid I prefer humor that isn’t at the expense of other people. Even though the lady was gracious enough to laugh doesn’t mean she enjoyed being the butt of a joke.

I’m a bit with Cheerful Monk on this one. (Although I might be the first to joke about men around the house being a bit of a pain.) It could be according to whose ox is being gored!

I reproduce the response I offered to Cheerful Monk. I will not crack that joke in the USA. On the other hand, I would in Ireland and Scotland.

Yes, it is always necessary to know your audience:) Or maybe not, just be
yourself and it will all come together in the end.

When I talk about woman alone at my house…I get people congratulating me through to people who later wonder why I haven’t done xyz…not really understanding that if I don’t do it (either want or not) then it doesn’t get done!

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence what?
Here in the USA we can’t trust Homepathy medicines because we’ve been told they aren’t tested by the government & could be unsafe.
Its better to have a women in our home…so have one…Thanks for sharing these story.

AMA and the drug industry strikes back!
Well said. I have a good friend that’s a medical doctor who worked 10 years & quit. She hates/dislikes the AMA (American Medical Ass.) & especially the way the drug industry influences the AMA.
