I was asked just yesterday by a friend Sundari, as to how I can be so happy all the time. This was after about ten minutes of telephone banter. I responded that she should not mistake my cheerfulness for happiness. She asked me to explain and I said that one can be cheerful and not happy but one cannot be happy without being cheerful. She decided that she had had enough and bid me good night. I hope that my readers will not run away without reading the full post.
Entrepreneurship is truly amazing. Find a need, design a product, produce it, market it and keep innovating it to cater to fine tuned needs as they change.
The latest need that has been identified as happiness. Why am I not surprised?
All that my so inclined readers have to do is to share their happiness formula in writing and market it and follow the formula listed in the second paragraph. Those who do not want to go through the process of getting hard copies published, the ebook option as well as the self publication online option are available.
You think that I am joking? There is big money to be made out there. If you don’ believe me, you can read this article in that venerable publication, The Economist.
After you read that, simply google for happiness and see how many ways there are to write about it and make money.

Happiness or diet books run evens at the finish line, The trouble is just reading them does nothing, a little like stopping smoking, You have to really ‘want’ to achiever your goal for it to work.

The classical philosophers all sought after the formula for happiness and wrote them down for free. Putting on my socialist hat, isn’t it the responsibility of the government to supply happiness to the people? Why should private entrepreneurs be allowed to extort vast profits simply because they have a formula that makes people happy? And shouldn’t we regulate these things? We could have a Federal Department For Happiness Oversight that provides peer reviewed analysis of happiness formulas and performs statistical studies before issuing licenses – which really should be necessary to insure that the formulas are genuinely effective and have no nasty side effects!

Whether it is the government’s responsibiity to supply happiness or not is a moot point. But, if there are people willing to pay a price for some formula for anything, if a legitimate open market is not available, an underground illegitimate market will function. Our history is replete with such instances like prohibition, import bans, etc.
I have to agree with you about happiness and cheerfulness. I have been very busy helping people from church. This has included spending 5 hours last night in the emergency room with one church member. (Yes, this is my third trip to the ER in the past few months.) I was miserable to be there, but I was cheerful. And I do think that goes a long way. I also think that true happiness is more than just momentary pleasure. We might be happy to get a new cell phone. But if we are not sure about the direction our life is going, or if we are not living up to our potential, chances are we are unhappy overall.

In my book, being cheerful is to extend courtesy to our fellow human beings. My misery is my business, why make the environment miserable?
I don’t think being happy is that hard. For me focusing on being grateful does it every time.

Absolutely, The world can do with a lot of gratitufe.
The King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, introduced the GNH (Gross National Happiness) to replace the GDP way back in 1972. And although the Bhutanese are still poor, studies indicate that they are happy! India’s population size may not permit us but alteast we can try!http://images.businessweek.com/ss/06/10/happiest_countries/source/9.htm

May be a few generations down the line, that is provided we exist on this planet, the world will be like Bhutan.
Do you think that writing about it creates happiness? That may work for me. I am writing about something that gives me happiness this a.m. Haven’t finished or published it yet and I don’t think it will make any money for me. I love you discussion of cheerfulness vs. happiness, btw.

I would put it this way. My gratitude list and blogging helps me from being unhappy. I will settle for that.
