My readers and I know of one wise woman. This story reminds me of her!
A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman. “I’ve been thinking,” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone.”

I was greatly affected by that story when I first read it years ago. Instead of a wise woman it was a monk, but it doesn’t matter. The story resonated and helped me keep focused on what was really important in my life.

PS I’ll bet neither one of the people in the story had any trouble being happy.

Quite so. But the world is full of people who hoard their valuables as if they were the Key to the Universe.

Our WWW is indeed wise with a wealth of talent and folklore to share. We humans are a strange lot almost coveting what others have, then discovering once we have it ,that we never really wanted it in the first place.

I doubt that it was altruism that motivated the woman. I think that it was total detachment from material things.

No human being is totally detached when some precious thing is before him (he will always find a way to make use of that material thing either to make himself more comfortable or to make someone else comfortable [and then we would be back to the question: what's in it for that individual - to help someone else?]. This could generate a whole new post…

I love this parable. Yes, there are bigger things that the tangible ones that most believe believe as important.

I really see this wise women as a person that gives of herself in hopes of helping others. I see the person receiving the stone as one that is never satisfied with what they have and wants more at someone’s else expense.

Aww, thank you Ramana – I pass on to you something else which your story put me in mind of:
“There are some people so poor that all they have is money.”

Hey maybe the woman wasn’t wise and feared the hungry traveler may try to take advantage or be a threat, her reason for giving up the stone in the first place…however for him to come back and ask that just speaks volumes of his character or consciousness. But these days he would’ve been long gone as nowadays people value things more than they do people smh…we all need to be more like the wise woman and monk.
I like reading a post that will make men and women think.
Also, many thanks for allowing for me to comment!
