Two days ago, my father suddenly decided that instead of a hard boiled egg every day, he would have a soft boiled one. Since our old egg cups could not be found I went looking for a couple in our neighbourhood stores. I could not purchase any in any of the shops here.
Manjiri offered to procure one for me from the city where she was going to anyway, and I was very happy to accept her offer. I however specified that I would prefer a stainless steel one as opposed to a ceramic one as, my father is likely to drop it and a ceramic one would shatter.
Manjiri scoured all the shops but could not find a stainless steel egg cup though she found a number of shops selling ceramic ones. Then, something clicked and she came up with a brilliant idea. She procured this for me:

Ideal as either cup could be used depending on the size of the egg, as the eggs that we get here are not always of the same size.
This however is not an egg cup. This is what we call a peg measure or what in the UK is called a spirit measure. Barmen use this to measure small or large shots of spirits.
So what? It serves the purpose. I inaugurated the cup earlier today and my father was delighted.
Thank you Manjiri for the brilliant idea.

Noe semi-hard would be a real dilemma!

I just love this thinking outside the box (or cup), don’t you?!

I was zapped when Manjiri produced this from her bag. Apart from the old associations with that must have gadget in my bar, I felt like kicking myself for not having thought of that myself. But there is a three decade age difference!
Soft boiled eggs and egg cups, that brings back warm childhood memories.

You are a better cook than me. All of my eggs turn out hard boiled. lol But I am learning to poach eggs, and I am in love with them!

Delirious, I can poach a mean egg too. I had to do some intense shopping to find just the right size pan, but I do have one and the result is simply amazing.
Good thinking Manjiri, excellent idea.
Regards, Keith.
I love it when new uses are found for commonplace items. Good job, Manjiri. She is thoughtful and persistent.

this reminds me of the tale of the green eggcup…
a number of years ago I had boiled up some soft ball eggs and on cracking the first one, I found it wasn’t edible so I decided to abandon the eggs after I noticed another was a very deep green…the smell wasn’t all that crash hot either…
So I went for a little walk to a “not often passed by street bin” and disposed the whole package in said bin…
The next day I buy fresh eggs and when it was all soft balled, I couldn’t find my “only eggcup” to realise that the very “dark green thing in the bag” was not an egg but the cup!!
A friend gave me a spare one…and then last year I won two wonderful china ones in a raffle. Now I prefer to create a tasty omelette

Cathy, I can well imagine that episode as similar things have happened to me too. I have thrown away can openers along with empty cans and bottle cap openers with the caps!
Gold Star to Manjiri, When not in use as an egg cup, it can be used for measuring other ingredients!

Does he feel cheated when his egg is merely jigger sized and not a full shot?

Oh, yes Shackman. In his life, he has not come across anything that has pleased him. One of these days, I shall post about this amazing dissatisfaction with everything. as a remarkable personality trait. And no, I am not exaggerating.
How very ingenious!

A lot of people enjoy eating hard boiled eggs. They are easy to make, don’t take a lot of effort and are a satisfying meal. Unfortunately hard boiled egg calories can make you fat.

You don’t have egg cups here because everyone eats egg as ‘omlate’.

Blessed art thou amongst the foolish.
Back in the early 2000s when we had just moved to Bombay and cake at home was still a rarity, I used to bring home a full fresh cream mango mouse cake from the veritable City Bakery in Worli on the way back from work. My wife and I savoured and lingered over a slice each and resolved to make it last the whole week. Unfortunately, our refrigerator- a 60 year old Kelvinator- Made in England given to us maybe fourthrth hand, to help us get started in Bombay by my FIL – had a bad day once and the cream went sour. So upset I was the next evening that I took the whole thing and dumped it in the bin. Only to realise later that I also threw away a brand new shiny stainless steel slice remover with the cake. We only replaced it a couple of months ago, with a few chuckles about the fate of its predecessor. Now, of course there is a surfeit of cake at home.

Surfeit? The cake that I brought over from my last visit, so lovingly baked and iced at the last moment, was a hit with the old man and he keeps asking me when I intend going back to Nerul!
The number of items, particularly knives that have disappeared along with the garbage in my household would make for a separate blog post.
Great site. Lots of useful info here. I’m sending it to several friends ans additionally sharing in delicious. And of course, thank you on your effort!

I prefer soft boil eggs just like your Dad. Manjiri is so innovative, she was able to replace the egg cup with spirit. Now you can use it for measure or serve your father’s soft boiled eggs.

This is a good idea to use a peg measure instead of a egg cup. Thanks for sharing this interesting post. Keep up the good work.
I haven’t had a boiled egg in years. I really want one now lol.
I always eat hard boiled eggs but I never had a soft boiled one. I am going to try it out tonight. I probably just get a ceramic holder since it seems like they are easier to find. I hope it goes well.
