This cartoon is doing the email rounds in India.
That needs some explaining for my friends from abroad.
OBC – Other Backward Classes.
SC – Scheduled Castes.
ST – Scheduled Tribes
Minorities – Mostly Muslims, but occasionally Christians of various denominations also get clubbed under this category.
This is called the quota system, though the percentages given in the cartoon are for effect only. For education and employment with the various state governments and the Central government, such quotas are fixed and if the vacancies remain unfilled, too bad.
What the cartoon fails to add is the fact that all the moon walkers will be government employees or politicians.

Though I presume there are another 1,000 crew fitting in the spaceship to represent the rest of the community. Or is the suggestion that the Haves have suddenly been frozen out?
“It’s political correctness gorn mad!” – is an oft-heard refrain in the UK. Usually doesn’t stand up when the facts are examined. But is a handy defence against anyone trying to broaden opportunities beyond the usual closed shop.

We have not quite reached that stage but it is a comic situation any way. Indian politics and facts simply don’t go together.
Being an American, this is hysterical … most especially “the moon walkers.”

Maxi, our affirmative action is the most hysterical as well as the most hilarious in the world. We must have the only groups of citizens who fight to be called backward.
Affirmative action is a good thing if it enables people normally discriminated against to get jobs. The only problem is that they then have to do their jobs superbly or else their colleagues will start whispering that they only got the job because they were black/ female/ disabled etc.

If I write about the affirmative action and the negative sides of it as affirmed by the people who benefited from such action, you would understand the humour in our situation where prosperous groups of people fight to be classified as backward.
Did he mention women, or are they still in the kitchen?

I am so against quotas and affirmative action systems: I understand the reason why it was created (it has its foundations once) but today it is simply insulting and discriminatory – we are supposed to have evolved, know what I mean? In Portugal, the socialists came up with quotas for women in the parliament (I don’t know if they actually implemented it) and in Brazil there are quotas for college students *nodding*.

You will laugh a lot more if you read about the absurdities in the system as written by those who benefited from the action. We are an interesting country.
Quota system is the main thing that bring illegible personalities to those posts which they don’t deserve. any how interesting post however you brings a good lesson for us.
